🌲 Plot Overview & Themes
The film explores the origins of the mythological lore introduced in the first Kantara (2022), focusing on the deep spiritual traditions, forest mysticism, and conflict between humans, nature, and divine forces.
Main character & arcs:
Berme is the protagonist — born and raised in the Kantara forest, he is deeply connected to its traditions and supernatural elements. Berme ventures outside the forest to the port of Bangra, is captured by Kulasekhar, but escapes with the help of an ally named Peppe. After escaping, Berme and his group are attacked by the Kadapa people. In a dramatic turn, a tiger intervenes at a critical moment, symbolizing divine protection or forest spirits stepping in. The story is set in pre-colonial Karnataka (around 300 CE) during the Kadamba dynasty, tying in tribal traditions, divine spirits (Daivas), and human ambition.
🎯 Why It Matters
It answers many of the mysteries and lore gaps left in Kantara (2022) — especially regarding how the divine elements (Daivas, forest spirits) came into being. It deepens the mythos and worldbuilding of the Kantara universe, making past events more meaningful. It also attempts to merge folklore, spirituality, and spectacle — making the forest, the devotional rituals, and nature itself a central “character.”
Setting & Premise
The film is set in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka, during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty (around 300 CE). It aims to show the origins of the tribal rituals, the divine deities (Panjurli Daiva, Guliga Daiva) and how the conflict between forest-tribes and kingdom begins.
Main Plot / Key Events
Royal Ambitions & Conflict Begins King Vijayendra of Bangra enters the Kantara forest in search of a sacred spice garden. He is killed by forest deities (Panjurli / Guliga) when he attacks the forest. His son Rajashekara ascends, forbidding entry into the forest. He has two children: Kulashekhara (reckless) and Kanakavathi (obedient). Birth & Growth of Berme In Kantara, a child is found inside a sacred well, believed born by divine will, adopted by a tribal woman. He is named Berme. As Berme grows, he ventures outside the forest to the Bangra kingdom (port region), sees exploitation of the forest’s spices, and starts trading for his people. Berme and Kanakavathi develop a romantic relationship. Escalating Conflict & Betrayal Kulashekhara, threatened by Berme’s influence, attacks the Kantara tribe. Berme’s foster mother is killed. In the battle, Berme becomes possessed by Guliga (one of the deities). Kanakavathi’s true allegiance is revealed: she has been secretly collaborating with the Kadapa clan and Rajashekara (her father) to harness the power of the deities. A war ensues against the Bangra kingdom. During a ritual in the kingdom temple, the Shivalinga cracks, causing imbalance. Climax & Resolution Berme, in a further divine possession state (by Chamundi, goddess of feminine power), defeats and kills both Kanakavathi and Rajashekara, restoring peace to Kantara. After the battle, Berme descends into the sacred well and vanishes. The narrative loops back to a framing device: in 1970, Kaadubettu Shiva’s father disappears in the same well, linking the legend across time.
